I think a number of societal things happened from when you were a teenager and your kids were.
You were a teen c.1970 when many YMCAs had only recently begun requiring a swimsuit at the pool. The 'traditional showering at school' I think fizzled out by the end of the 80s in most places for several reasons.

Prior to the 60s, many homes had only one bathroom. This business about every child having their own room and multiple bathrooms in the house is a pretty recent development. If there was more than one boy in the family, you usually shared a room and there was typically only one bathroom in houses built pre-60s especially, unless your family was well off. This invariably led to a sharing of the bathroom among the same-sex family members. If there were several boys, you would sometimes bathe together or in tandem one right after another, depending on the water heater capacity.
Showering at school, therefore was not a big deal for most people that grew up with brothers, as you almost certainly would have grown up seeing each other naked, using the bathroom, jacking off, etc. Most families are smaller now as well, adding to the privacy most boys have growing up now.

Swimming naked with your friends was also far more common the further back you go. Life in rural areas led to kids playin at the swimmin' hole and most families didn't spend money on a suit for swimming, and you didn't have that many clothes to begin with. If it was just boys, you naturally went naked.

There is also the thought that PE class and school sports in earlier decades was somewhat modeled after the military and existed at least in part, to train boys physically and socially for military life. You and I escaped the draft, but it was a likelihood for a boy becoming a man in the 40s or 60s. As the nation became 'less military,' for a lack of a better term, less people involved in running and designing schools have ever served in the military and also grew up with more privacy themselves as I mentioned before.

Homosexuality and child molestation are two huge issues that I think have led to the end of school showers. Both of these issues attained nationwide attention in the 1980s. The days of coach standing at the shower entrance making sure every boy showers certainly ended by 1990.

Immigrants and cultural attitudes have something to do with this as well. I'm not getting into political debate, but more Mexican/Latino immigrants bringing with them their cultural modesty has helped to change locker room attitudes. In prior decades, especially during the first half of the 20th century, more immigrants came from European and Asian countries, especially on the two coasts, and they brought their cultural attitudes toward nudity with them.

Difficult question to answer. The showers should have no age limitations, there is nothing shameful or inappropriate about taking a shower. The gym 'facilities' is a little hazy. I'm guessing 12 and up at least, I don't think prepubescent boys should be messing with weight or exercise equipment.
