Don't think scouting needs to change anything at all. Don't know what is going to happen with the scouting for boys or even girls too. They are going to get short changed on have fun as young people and their growing up.

Didn't realize how discriminatory the organization was until a few years ago. I was in Scouts as a kid, myself and had a blast. But, upon volunteering to take over as Scoutmaster for our son's Cub Scout pack, I learned otherwise. For example, being an atheist, had I disclosed that information, I would have been rejected as an adult volunteer.

Yes Rod, scouting has changed it policy's so much over the years. My brother-in-law and myself had about 15 Weblo's with a good friend of our back when my nephew were real young, no other parents care enough to help us as leaders, some of them didn't even come to awards night. But they were on the verg of doing back ground check at that time. I am not sure how NAND yrs it been maybe 20+ yrs now, my nephews were 8 and 9 and they both are in their 30's now.

Glad to hear that there are more of you young men out there that had good menories of fun scouting date. I think it's some of my fondest times, see my dad passed away when I was 12 and me and my brother needed some good in our life's after that, and scouting help out so much. Young folks today don't have that to look forward to. When you see them out and about they seem lost in what they want to do.

When articles show up on the internet about the gay scout and scout leader issue, the radical right wing social conservatives go crazy with anguished comments about the homosexual rape, etc, that will be going on in the scout tents. This is really a hot button issue with the gun toting, Bible thumping, liberal hating crowd. The rhetoric really becomes heated and hateful.

The problem with the Scouts involves its sponsoring organizations, which are heavily Catholic and Mormon. So traditionally, the "God and Country" scouting organization hates the gays and the atheists. If you can't hate gays and atheists, what's the fun of being "religious."

One hateful attitide that shows up over and over in the debate about gay scout leaders is that they are overwhelmingly pedophiles who will prey on the young boys. When you try to point out that pedophiles are overwhelmingly heterosexual, you are called a liar, and the hate is turned on you personally. This is a really nasty issue in which appeals to facts are just considered liberal lies by the hateful right wing crazies.

Maybe "Boy Scouts" don't hate atheists, they love them and they also happen to believe in God. Maybe they don't hate gays, they love them, they just don't happen to be gay. To disagree about right and wrong or to disagree about world view is not to hate. Can't the gay, liberal left have a little tolerance to allow half the population to live a very old, traditional lifestyle that has been the prevailing social norm for all of history?

My own experience in scouts is that sex was a pretty much taboo subject. No one jacked off that anyone knew about. No hanky panky in sleeping bags. Don't get me wrong, I was involved in my share of escapades including sleeping bag jacking with a friend, but never in years of scouting outings.

The issue of homosexuality in scouting has little to do with the sexual orientation of scouts or leaders, but everything to do with the brash demand to faust it on others, to demand that others accept their sexuality (homosexual or heterosexual). Adolescent scouts may not be the best forum for that. Trumpeting sexual preferences may be the real issue for children in scouts. And those who feel compelled to press their sexuality on children are properly deemed pedophiles.

As for hate, I was referring to the tone of the internet debate on the issue. And while the traditional Boy Scouts of America may say they don't "hate" the gays and the atheists, they are damn sure that they don't want them to be a part of their organization.

And I'm a little sick of hearing about how the Bible thumping right wing just wants to be let alone to enjoy a "traditional lifestyle." Then they proceed to advocate laws and constitutional amendments that will prevent others from getting married to whomever they love, for example. Religious people want everyone else to believe what they believe and live the way they live. As far as I can see, atheists respect religious belief a lot more than Christians respect atheists.
