According to Wikipedia, sperm is reincarnated. The old sperm are transformed by enzymes into compounds which are re-manufactured into fresh sperm. The waste product becomes Semen which accounts for the increasing "buckets." Another waste product is a hormone which enhances endorphin action producing much greater pleasure.

Don't believe everything you read.

Think of it like a toilet cistern. If you flush the toilet and the try to flush it again before the cistern has had a chance to fill then you get less water on that flush. Once the cistern is full a ball-valve shuts off and the amount of water doesn't increase so that limits the amount of water delivered in one flush.

It is a bit like that with ejaculating. If you ejaculate frequently the glands involved in semen production (mostly the prostate and the seminal vesicles) never get full and your load is smaller than it could be. As you leave it longer between ejaculations the load increases until you reach a point where the glands are getting completely full. Once they are full your load does not get any bigger however long you leave it and for most guys that point is reached in about 3 days. Where the toilet cistern analogy breaks down is that once full a state of equilibrium is reached in which production is balanced by reabsobtion.

My limited experience of leaving it a few days between ejaculations is that the semen then seems to be much thicker and does not shoot as readily. That does tend to suggest that what is reabsorbed is mostly water such that the concentration of other chemicals* in the semen increases the longer it has been since the last ejaculation. This has been suggested as a possible reason for the increased risk of prostate cancer for men who ejaculate infrequently.

On the other hand edging seems to increase the volume and make it thinner which means it shoots much better so presumably at least one of the glands can respond to arousal by adding extra liquid to the semen, but not extra substance.

* although sperm are also in a continuous production cycle with some reabsorbtion of those who have died before being ejaculated, they make up so little of the cum (1% by volume) that they aren't relevant to a discussion on size of load.

I believe that the amount of cum decreases as we age and or our state of health. Now days I feel like a basketball player I'm just an old dribbler.
