I've not tried to use Yahoo Messenger to chat with fellow jackers for a couple of years - downloaded the latest version and logged into my old account but now you can't see who is online.

Is there a standard work around for this? Is there a way of using it in the way everyone used to back in the glory days?

unfortunately doesn't seem to be. most guys i know now use skype.

Google Hangouts is really good. It's the new messenger, except for gmail instead of yahoo. It works really well, yet hardly anyone uses it. I love it.

Unfortunately I don't think there's a way to make it function like it did. It seems they've opted to make YIM function similar to how Discord works (to a degree). Skype has also done some revamping but at least you can see when people are online. Perhaps YIM's still in its early stages and that feature will be restored later.

I've used Google Hangouts for a while (well the video chat that also has an instant messenger in it a few times) - still use the messenger portion. There's still people using it but traffic and interest have died down somewhat since the big "G" likes to get an itch up its ass about suggestive/explicit content, even when you have private things set up (at least for me and the few communities I've been in that have had that happen). Google's scripts are kinda shit though so it takes a bit for a bunch of images to load properly in the standard chat box. If there's a bunch of pics it slows down when you try to scroll back up to view earlier ones.
