Why are so many American men circumcised,compared with men in the UK and europe

While it is less so now, for many years the standard practice in the US was to circumcise male babies in any hospital birth. I suppose it was for perceived hygiene advantages, but no one ever really said..maybe it was to make more money on the birth. My parents were unusual at the time in refusing to allow then to circumcise me. Gee, I always thought my parents were really considerate, but maybe they were just cheapskates!
