I signed up for one private tracker called Pornbay because my first choice, Empornium, didn't even allow new members. I tried to keep a lot of stuff seeded to be a good citizen, but it didn't matter. I started getting warnings almost immediately, and was barred from downloading due to low ratio within a month or so. I concluded that the torrent culture is extremely hostile to noobs, and that they really only want people willing to rip and upload material that is copyrighted or worse. (The 'most popular' list seemed to be dominated by incest, bestiality, and other creepy stuff.)

To top it off, you still tend to wade through a lot of garbage to find anything good, just like on tube sites. I still keep a copy of qbittorrent for when I stumble on a safe public link, but in my experience it just isn't a very valuable tool for anybody who isn't willing to go full pirate. Do you disagree?

I finally figured out it comes from pasting certain characters from Word. (I like to compose in Word because I usually have a copy open, and typing more than a few sentences into a web page is a good way to lose your work.)

In this case it was the bent version of the apostrophe (used by Word) vs. the straight one "'". I'll bet this has been driving a lot of other people batty too.
