It was hard on at my school. 
"Boner" was the only word we used at my school, at least up to 7th grade or so. I never heard it from a girl's mouth, but I have to believe they called it the same thing. I wonder what word they used for getting wet.
The first expression I heard at school was 'bonk on'. I had no idea what it meant at the time! I've never heard it since though - as school progressed the most common expression people used was 'hard on' and occasionally 'stiffy'.
'Boner' I didn't hear until much later - and I rarely hear anyone say it in the real world, only online. Perhaps it's more common in American English than British English.

In reading through all the above comments, you can clearly see that those of us about 60 + years old, grew up with "boners" and that in our teen years, the word hard-on became more common. The fact that adults during our early years used the term "pulled a boner", tells me that they must have had another word for young hard cocks. Stiffie was sometimes used, but not nearly as common as hard-on or boner. As MARRIEDBONER said above, I wonder what the girls called their pussies, when they were excited and got wet.
