Next time you decide to use 'lol' in a message, here or elsewhere, do yourself a favour: once you've finished writing it, read the message out loud, actually laughing out loud instead of pronouncing 'lol' as a word. Notice how you sound like a mentally deranged idiot. Now you know how you come across to people who read your messages.

People who say "lol" are usually just trying to bring levity to a place where it can't be given by tone of voice or facial expression, but it does come across as stupid and vaguely insulting, especially when overused. OP probably could have made his point without sounding like he was blowing smoke in our faces, but then again he is British.

There are some things that get up my nose when it comes to the way people post things, but using generally recognised and accepted terms like lol isn't a problem. Only gets annoying when people start using these kind of things in actual speech (which seems to be happening a lot lately).
