I have posted my name on wicker or Kik lists on here. when I post my name I put my interests on the post. More often than not the responses I get are " hi". I have stopped responding to one word messages. How do you handle situations like that? If I respond to someone I see on a list I'll tell them where I saw their name and what I believe we have in common. Is that too much to ask of others?

It's still a good way to start a conversation, isn't it? If you reply, do they give you more information subsequently? I've started a conversation like that before, usually because I'm not totally sure I've typed the name in correctly, or maybe you didn't type it correctly, or whatever.

I guess my main question is: if you reply to a 'hi' does a conversation start, or not?
