Brought up strict protestant, all sex totally banned except married procreation, it was actually a retired Catholic priest who took an informed and understanding interest in my persistent masturbating which in my 30s was causing some problems for me. I am neutral on the subject of how some people of faith believe they should abstain from some sexual activities or even all sexual activity. I think it is up to the personal choice of the individual. In the nature of his job my priest had needed to counsel trainee religious of both sexes that the vow of celibacy included no masturbating. Most entrants to religious orders had been morally unpromiscuous or were virgin but some would confess on questioning to well established masturbating habits, which being solo and secretive, they possibly hoped to continue. My priest had taken an interest in how to discourage and disuade masturbating for those whose vows would soon prohibit masturbating. Some otherwise meritorious individuals whose masturbating habits were too intense to be given up completely might after assessment receive dispensation for limited controlled masturbating, accompanied by more or less severe penances. He advised a version of this approach for myself. This would be for me scary, humiliating and embarrassing, but he encouraged me, explaining that I would be in much better moral balance with myself if I was to fully and openly confess my masturbating to someone who was willing and equipped to help me to control and reduce my masturbating.

So respect and responsibility is what it all boils down to. Another thing the priests who told us not to masterbate at school never told us how to prevent ourselves from doing it.
