Because then you'd have to hold your arm out, or use a selfie stick, neither of which is necessarily the desired pose.
I kind of like the phones in the images - or, more specifically, the fingers holding the phone. Fingers are a very intimate, personal part of the body. To me, there's a sort of sensual contrast between the guy's beautiful, confident chest that he's brashly showing off and his fingers. He isn't trying to display his fingers, they are just there accidentally because he has to hold the phone. So they come across as a more real and unique part of him.
Very philosophical, but I think the fingers are almost the most erotic part of these pictures.
